Remove PDF Metadata

Every PDF carries hidden fields — author name, software, timestamps. Drop yours in to see exactly what it's revealing. Checking is free.

How to Remove PDF Metadata

Drop a PDF in and the tool reads its document information fields — title, author, subject, keywords, the creating application, the producing library, and both timestamps — then shows you exactly what's there. That check is free and needs no account. When you download the cleaned copy, every text field is emptied, both dates are reset, and the XMP metadata block and any per-page metadata are removed. All of it happens in your browser using pdf-lib; the file itself is never uploaded anywhere.

When You Need to Strip PDF Metadata

  • Sending a résumé or proposal built from a template that still names the original author
  • Filing a document publicly when the Author field holds your legal name or work username
  • Publishing a report where the Creator field reveals which internal software produced it
  • Sharing a PDF whose creation date contradicts the story you're telling about when it was written
  • Passing a document to a journalist, regulator, or opposing party who will absolutely check

What This Does and Doesn't Remove

  • Metadata is not the same as content — text still inside the document body stays there. To remove visible text permanently, use the redaction tool instead.
  • Timestamps are reset rather than deleted. PDF viewers show a date whether or not one was set, so a reset date is the honest floor, not a blank.
  • Password-protected PDFs can't be processed. Remove the password first.
  • Embedded images can carry their own EXIF data, including GPS coordinates, which lives inside the image and not in the PDF's fields.
  • Digital signatures are invalidated by any change to the file, including this one. Strip metadata before signing, never after.
